BETTY CLEELAND's work is an exploration of patterns and codes as they exist in movement and in spatial precepts. She is interested in the idea of the choreography and position of the stars. Throughout her work, the circle and ellipse play a central part. She finds these to be the most interesting of the geometrical shapes as they have no beginning and no ending and no particular orientation. Cleeland uses a mathematical system as well as an aesthetic one in placing the circles and ellipses, a code that determines the color, number and placement of each object as it moves about the canvas. The result of the strong connection between mathematics and art iaction of thos an abstrught, a visualization of something that is not tangible, that seemingly is not visible, that requires a movement of thought beyond the immediate conception. |
