DAN DEVENING contrasts and intertwines his distinct painterly engagements in order to interpret the exertions of outside forces on objects, as well as the reciprocal reactions of these things on the spaces they occupy. These gestures generate three different energies that define his visual acumen: the broad, physical gestures of his body using a large print roller to create asymmetrical, atmospheric "tile" backgrounds; the vicissitudes of entangled, serpentine contour lines, spontaneously wiped out of and selectively re-painted on top of these fields; and the heightened caesuras created between his fields and lines.
