Richard Gibbons

RICHARD GIBBONS strips the conventional references which make parts of the body immediately identifiable. This allows the artist to explore the figure primarily for its landscape and sculptural qualities. A veil of overpainting becomes an atmosphere above the base painting wherein lies the image. The image, like the body subject matter, is transitory.  
Gibbons' more recent switch to abstraction preserves his passion for depth, layering, and translucence while increasing his concentration on pure form and movement. Allusions to nature, water, and celebration or even an awakening of matter itself abound. Yet the work remains purely abstract.
The connective tissue between Gibbons' abstract and portrait work is his focus throughout on landscape.
