Joel Perlman

JOEL PERLMAN builds sculptural abstractions by welding metal pieces in stacks or precarious joints. Working in the tradition of David Smith, he constructs art of multiple parts and considers voids to be positive space. Strength of form generally overcomes a tendency toward fussy detail. One of the work's most interesting aspects is its counterpoint of line and mass. As slabs of metal rise or frame irregular shapes of space, they are enlivened by smaller metal dashes and arcs.
