(Estate) Jay Phillips

JAY PHILLIPS' paintings, sculptures and silkscreen prints are all comprised of gestural brushstrokes with a striped, hard-edged sensibility and clean, geometric patterns against flowing, spontaneous landscapes. Phillips cut and folded his materials to form overlaps and projections. His use of bright colors reflected his early Southern California artmaking, which remained a strong influence even after moving to New York City. Phillips' artwork functions today as emblematic of his reverance for the world and for the history of its representation in art.
