BRIGITTE RIESEBRODT's work is greatly influenced by Renaissance era painting, especially the frescoes. Her inspiration comes mainly from nature as a kind of echo.
The work transforms memories of visual impressions, experiences and emotions into abstract compositions while stressing the sensual and tactile aspects of color and material through layering paint and wax. At times collage is incorporated into the process to further inform the layers of history in the work.
The artist has long made use of found objects to convey that sense of history. This is particularly true in her use of old wine barrel staves from Tuscany and her sculpturally altered discarded books. She uses the warm, deep colors of Italy in most all of her pieces. The books, more formal in appearance than the staves, are altered and painted with a mixed media, wax and oil.
Due to the layering of painterly media and the addition, in some cases, of found objects, Riesebrodt feels as if the finished work is itself transformed into a found object through the artistic process.
