(Estate) Jonathan Thomas |
JONATHAN THOMAS considered Marshall McLuhan's statement, "the medium is the message" to be a major inspiration for his sculptures, which are made of wood pulp, paper, wood and polymer resin. Both the "Language Robe" and the "____ Fragments" series use ordinary materials to imply that the construction is basic or primal in nature, recalling both central African carvings and technological structures. Thomas' work makes the case that the world has undergone a progression from the Industrial Revolution to the Age of Technology. His pieces make references in the "____ Fragments" series toward the components of a computer. Similar to the way a computer may not take on its recognizable character until programmed for specific functions, the sculptures do not gain identity until they become a part of one's collection. At that time the title is completed using the name of the person who has made the piece whole. |
